“DNA cannot basically be anonymized. Companies must be transparent about what happens to genetic data and, above all, whether and to whom it is passed on”. In the context of national security, however, companies do not always have to disclose all information, which can lead to data subjects’ rights being restricted. “Particularly in third countries such as the USA, where such laboratories are often located, there is a risk that authorities have or will have access to the data in the future. Those affected are often not aware of this,” explains Kern.
